Why are softballs yellow?

Yellow Softballs

Even though you can find softballs in many different colors, white, blue, pink etc… Yellow is the prominent color when it comes to college softball.

It wasn’t until 2002 though that both the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) made bright-yellow the official color of their respective leagues’ softball.

The main reason for using yellow is pretty simple, it makes the ball easier to be seen. With the pitching mound in college softball being 17 feet closer to home plate then in baseball the ball gets on the batter fast and the bright yellow color of the softball allows for the batter to see the ball better and react to the pitch.
