ACC Softball Week-5 Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Abby Weaver has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Duke’s Peyton St. George earned ACC Pitcher of the Week.
The ACC softball weekly awards are voted on by a panel from both the schools and the conference office.
Weaver helped Virginia to a 3-1 record last week, including a series win over No. 24 Notre Dame, its first over a nationally ranked opponent since the 2010 season. She hit a three-run walk-off home run to cap a five-run, seventh-inning rally in game one against the Fighting Irish. It was her first home run of the season, and the three RBI are a career high. Weaver then drove in the first run of game two as part of a four-run, second-inning rally as Virginia claimed the series with a 6-1 victory. For the week, the native of Roanoke, Virginia, was 5-for-10 with a .500 batting average and four RBI.
St. George went 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched, striking out 36 batters while allowing just five hits. She threw three complete games and extended her complete game streak to four in a row dating back to March 6. The Mechanicsville, Virginia, native set a program record with 15 strikeouts in the second game of a doubleheader against NC State, helping the team to the series sweep. St. George followed her record-breaking performance with a 12-strikeout shutout of the Wolfpack on Sunday, setting the highest two-game strikeout stretch of her collegiate career.
