If you follow college softball you’ll notice that there has been a flurry of athletes transferring to new teams via the transfer portal. I was working on a posting about all the transfers and how I didn’t think it was good for the sport then on Thursday came the announcement that UCLA and USC will be joining the Big Ten in 2024. WHAT! When you think of the Pac-12 those two schools are the first ones people think about. It’s stunning to me that they are transferring to a different conference. I’m guessing like most things these days it’s based on finances. The old saying is that if you want to find the truth out about something follow the money trail. The two teams are to join the Big Ten officially on August 2, 2024 with all athletic competition to start in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Don’t forget that earlier this year powerhouses Oklahoma and Texas also announced that they were leaving the Big12 to join the SEC in either 2024 or 2025.
With the recent developments mentioned above I’ve changed my mind and say let it be like the wild west with, teams, coaches and players going wherever they want and let the chips fall where they may. My fear is though we’re gonna end up with a lot of mediocre teams like has happened in the NFL. Or several really good teams that complete each year for championships while the rest are like the New Jersey Generals when they played against the Harlem Globetrotters, just there as some easy competition for them to put on a show.
