Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball head coach Gerry Glasco announced on Wednesday (Nov. 9, 2022) the signing of Lafayette native Gabbie Stutes to a National Letter of Intent to join the program beginning with the 2024 season.

Stutes is a middle infielder who is set to wrap up her prep career at St. Thomas More Catholic High School this spring. For the past six years, she has competed on the travel ball circuit with the Houston Hotshots.

“We are extremely excited about having Gabbie (Stutes) join our program,” Glasco said. “She brings another lefty bat to our program and has shown the ability to hit the ball to all fields with power.

“She has grown up following the Ragin’ Cajuns Softball program and will exemplify the type of quality academic student-athlete we want to lead in our program.”

Last spring, Stutes crafted a .475 average and led STM in doubles, triples, home runs and RBI en route to earning the district MVP title, the honor in addition to all-state, all-metro and all-district accolades.

It was the third consecutive .400-plus hitting season for Stutes, the Cougars’ starting shortstop since her freshman season, who has been the team’s leader in doubles for three years running.

Georgia

Georgia Softball Inks Three for 2024

University of Georgia head softball coach Tony Baldwin has announced the signing of three future Bulldogs to the 2024 roster. The signing class includes infielders Hannah Davila and Emily Digby and utility Emma Castorri.

“This is an exciting day for Georgia Softball and we got better as a program today with the signing of these three young women,” Baldwin began. “I am proud of the work that our staff put in to assemble class together. Not only will these student-athletes make our team better next year, but they will also be key pieces to the puzzle in the future.

“What is particularly exciting about these three players is that they are so versatile, athletic, and physical. They have a high level of softball I.Q. which allows them to play nearly any position on the field. We are thankful that Emma, Emily, and Hannah have chosen to be a part of the Bulldog family and can’t wait to get them to Athens. Let’s go!”

Emma Castorri | Utility | R/R | 5-8 | Buford, Ga. | Buford HS

Emma Castorri signs to UGA from Buford High School where she was a four-year starter for the Wolves. She earned all-region status her first three years of high school, was named defensive MVP as a junior, and was a qualifier for the senior All-State game in 2022. As a senior, Castorri helped lift the Wolves to a 7A state championship. Off the diamond, she competed in track and field for two seasons and earned a spot on the AB honor roll. Castorri plays club for Georgia Bombers Lewis.

Baldwin on Castorri: “Emma comes from an athletic family. She has played in one of the best high school programs in the country in Buford HS, under former Coach Tony Wolfe and now Coach Trent Adams. She has played on highly competitive travel teams, most recently for the Bombers and Patrick Lewis. When you ask her coaches about Emma, they all say she is a ‘glue gal.’ She brings people together which is such a critical ingredient for a successful team. On top of that, she has a knack for the big hit and big play. What I love most about Emma is that she has a high level of ‘figure it out’ to her! We are excited to welcome Emma and her family to the Classic City.”

Hannah Davila | Infield | R/R | 5-8 | Flossmoor, Ill. | Wesley Chapel HS

Hannah Davila signs to Georgia from Wesley Chapel High School outside Tampa, Florida. Davila originally hails from Flossmoor, Illinois where she attended Homewood Flossmoor High School the first three years of her prep career, earning all-conference honors and MVP status twice before moving to the Tampa area. She will play her senior season at Wesley Chapel HS in the Spring. Aside from softball, Davila also plays basketball. Davila plays club for Lady Dukes Lamar.

Baldwin on Davila: “Hannah is a high-end athlete. She is physical and especially agile. She has all the traits of being an elite defender whether that be in the middle of the infield or the corners. She has crazy raw power with her bat and her best days as a hitter are still ahead of her. She is another one that comes from an athletic family and plays the game with a high level of softball I.Q. She has played highly competitive travel ball under Coach Rocky Thompson and the Thunderbolts and now is playing in the Lady Dukes program under James Lamar. We are excited to welcome Hannah and her family to Athens.”

Emily Digby | Infield | R/R | 5-8 | Dacula, Ga. | Dacula HS

Emily Digby signs to Georgia from Dacula High School where she was a four-year starter for the Falcons. Digby’s senior season culminated in setting new Dacula career records for batting average (.438), runs (166), RBI (127), hits (155), doubles (42), home runs (34), and walks (70). She also holds eight single-season records at DHS. She has been named first team all-region, all-county, and all-state throughout her prep career. As a junior she was named the Region 8, GDP, and Gwinnett County Player of the Year. She was the back-to-back Dacula Player of the Year in 2019 and 2020. She received an invite to the GADC Senior All-State Game this past season and appeared in the PGF All-America Game in both 2020 and 2021. Off the field, she is a member of the Dacula leadership team, peer leading, FCA, and Delta Message. She plays club for Georgia Impact Sampson.

Baldwin on Digby: “The more we watched Digs play during the evaluation process, the more we absolutely loved her game. She is a natural shortstop, but we have seen her play nearly every position other than pitcher. She has a calm and competitive demeanor to her that allows her to be highly consistent. She is an outstanding athlete with tremendous balance – you rarely see get her body out of position. She has a smooth and repeatable swing with surprising power and looks to be a middle of the lineup-type RBI producer. Emily has played locally for the Bombers organization and is a long-time member of the Georgia Impact organization as well. We are excited to get Emily in the Red and Black and welcome her family to the Georgia Softball family.”

Penn State

Softball Welcomes Five on Signing Day

Nittany Lions add a catcher, outfielder, two infielders and a pitcher in the 2023 class

The Penn State softball program bolstered its team with five additions on National Signing Day this Wednesday. Outfielder/utility Michela Barbanente (Itasca, Ill.), third baseman Brooke Klosowicz (Johnsburg, Ill.), shortstop Jiselle Hernandez (Burbank, Calif.), catcher Audree Mendoza (San Diego, Calif.) and first baseman/pitcher Bridget Nemeth (Glendora, Calif.), will join the Nittany Lions in fall 2023.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce the signing of our 2023 recruiting class,” head coach Clarisa Crowell said. “I am very excited about this talented group of student-athletes, and I know that they will be a significant part of our team for the next four years.”

An outfielder and utility, Barbanente signs with the Nittany Lions out of Itasca, Illinois and currently plays with the Beverly Bandits Conroy. Last summer, the Beverly Bandits were Easton Rawlings Champions, IDT Champions, and Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) Nationals Runners Up. As a member of the Lake Park High School, Barbanente earned all-state first team, all-conference first team and all-academic team each of the last two years. In addition, she has also been the conference player of the year twice. Michela is also an all-conference performer in both basketball and volleyball.

“Michela is a dynamic player who plays the game with a ton of energy and enthusiasm,” Crowell said. “Defensively, Michela is a versatile player, and she has the ability to play multiple positions. Offensively, she will be a great addition to our lineup, bringing both power and speed. Michela plays for the Beverly Bandits, which is one of the premier organizations in the country, and she knows what it takes to win at the highest level. Michela is passionate about the game, and I know she will be a great leader for our program.”

A third baseman from Johnsburg, Illinois, Klosowicz has played with the Illinois Chill Gold travel club for the last four years. She led her team to a ninth-place finish in the 18U Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship. Her squad also placed seventh in the Alliance National Championship Series. With Johnsburg High School, Klosowicz earned all-conference, all-area and all-state honors twice. She helped the team to the 2021 conference and regional titles.

“Brooke is a fiery player who is known to be one of the hardest workers on her team,” Crowell said. “Brooke plays for the Illinois Chill, which is a top-notch program in the country, and she has played at the highest level for several years. Defensively, Brooke is a solid third baseman because of her quickness and ability to defend the short game. Offensively, she is someone who will bring power to our lineup. Brooke loves to work hard in the weight room and on the field, and we are looking forward to her joining our team next fall.”

Hernandez is a shortstop from Burbank, California. Hernandez has been a member of several national championship travel ball teams and recently helped her high school to the 2022 CIF-SS Semi-Finalist and STU Penter Tournament Championship. Her travel team Corona Angels placed third at Triple Crown Nationals and the Alliance National Championship. She has numerous individual accolades including, USA Elite Future All-American and 2023 PGF All-American Game nominee.

“Jiselle is a highly competitive and savvy player, and she plays the game with a lot of confidence,” says Crowell. “Overall, she is a very good shortstop and a solid offensive player. I believe Jiselle will provide us with versatility on defense because of her athleticism and defensive skillset. Jiselle has played high caliber softball her entire career, and she is currently on the Corona Angels, which is a one of the best organizations in the country. She knows what it takes to compete at the highest level, and I know that she will be a great addition to our program.”

As a catcher from San Diego, California, Mendoza played alongside Hernandez on the Corona Angels. The Angels placed third at 2022 Triple Crown Nationals and 2022 Alliance National Championship. She is a three-year starter for Rancho Bernardo High entering her senior year. She has helped her squad to a Division I runner-up finish and earned first-team All-Palomar league designation in 2021. She has also been an athlete of the year nominee and was named team MVP.

“Audree is an energetic player, and she plays the game with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm,” Crowell said. “As a catcher, she has a strong defensive skillset, but her ability to communicate with her pitchers and defense is what separates her from most. Audree is also a good hitter, and she is someone who we will look to contribute both offensively and defensively. Audree has also competed at the highest level with the Corona Angels with her fellow incoming Penn State teammates, Jiselle and Bridget. She is a team player and a strong vocal leader, and I know Audree will be a great fit for our program.”

From Glendora, California, Nemeth is expected to see time as a pitcher and first baseman. She is also a member of the Corona Angels who placed third at the Alliance National Championship with fellow signees Hernandez and Mendoza. In the Alliance National Championship, she earned all-tournament team accolades. Playing for Glendora High School, Nemeth has been honored with first-team all-league, All-Tribune Team, first-team CIF and second-team all-state recognition. In 2022, she was named team MVP.

“Bridget is a very talented player, and she will bring a unique skillset to our program next year,” says Crowell. “Bridget is someone who we will expect to have an impact for us on defense, in the circle and on offense. Defensively, Bridget is a strong right-handed pitcher, and she will also see time at first base. Offensively, she is a left-handed power hitter who will add depth to our lineup. Bridget is a very good player, but most importantly, she is a hard worker and a great teammate. She is currently teammates with Audree and Jiselle, and she has also competed against some of the best teams in the country. Bridget will be a great addition to our team, and we are looking forward to her arrival next fall.”

“Our program places an emphasis on comprehensive excellence, and I know this group will work hard both on the field and in the classroom, and most importantly, they will be great representatives of Penn State Softball,” said Crowell. “We are very happy to welcome Michela Barbanente, Brooke Klosowicz, Jiselle Hernandez, Audree Mendoza and Bridget Nemeth to our Penn State Family. We Are!”
